Flores Dominates Briones in PBC on FS1 Main Event, Wins Unanimous Nod

There weren’t any visible jitters for young contender Miguel Flores in his first ever main event battle. The unbeaten featherweight remained as such by dominating tough Mexican veteran Mario Briones, winning an action-packed, albeit lopsided unanimous decision over 10 rounds.

Flores (19-0, 9 KOs) mixed up his attacks plenty of times to keep Briones guessing. But he was most effective when he opted to fight his foe at his own game, which was slugging it out in a virtual phone booth for much of the fight. The two took turns ripping into each other’s body and head throughout the contest, but Flores was the quicker, more accurate puncher.

It also helped that Flores was the harder puncher as Briones (27-5-2, 20 KOs) was wobbled a few times in the skirmish, which electrified the capacity crowd inside the Cowboys Dancehall in San Antonio, Texas. Both men suffered gnarly cuts above their left eyes in the contest, which was the featured attraction on the first Premier Boxing Champions’ Toe-To-Toe Tuesdays card on Fox Sports 1 of 2016.

In the end, the Houston-based contender was too effective with his surgical strikes and Briones simply couldn’t keep up with the younger, more dynamic fighter. Flores wound up winning easily (though the battle certainly was not) via tallies of 98-92 and 100-90 (twice).

Young welterweight prospect Bryant Perella (13-0, 12 KOs) was too much for late replacement opponent Ramon Ayala to handle as the Fort Myers, Fla. fighter ripped into Ayala’s head and body immediately. Ayala (23-6-1, 11 KOs) couldn’t keep up with the speed and punching power of “Goodfella” Perella and after two rounds, he and his corner had decided that they’ve seen enough, opting out of the fight between rounds two and three. There were no knockdowns in the fight.

Lightweight prospect Ahmed Elbiali kept his unblemished record in tact with a solid performance against Andrew Hernandez, edging the Phoenix-based fighter via unanimous decision over eight rounds. Elbiali (14-0, 11 KOs), originally from Egypt but fighting out of Miami, was the aggressor throughout and landed the harder shots en route to winning by scores of 78-74 and 77-75 (twice). Hernandez fell to 10-4-1 with 2 KOs.
