Alex Pereira may still lead their overall combat sports series, but Israel Adesanya definitely has a leg up on his rival in real time.
“The Last Stylebender” earned his first victory over Pereira in brutal fashion, knocking out his former kickboxing foe 4:21 into the second stanza of their headlining bout at UFC 287 in Miami on Saturday night. Adesanya begins his second reign as middleweight champion after losing the belt to Pereira at UFC 281 this past November. Pereira, meanwhile, owns a 3-1 record against the Nigerian-born Kiwi, but he’ll head home empty-handed following his second career MMA defeat.

83: Significant strikes landed by Kelvin Gastelum in a unanimous decision triumph over Chris Curtis at middleweight. By comparison, Curtis landed 70. Gastelum outlanded his foe 63 to 44 in head strikes and 15 to 5 in leg strikes, while Curtis held a 21-to-5 advantage in significant body strikes.

5: Consecutive losses in UFC competition for Calvillo. In addition to Godinez, Calvillo has come up short against Nina Nunes, Andrea Lee, Jessica Andrade and Katlyn Chookagian. 99: Significant strikes landed by Ignacio Bahamondes in a clear-cut decision triumph over Trey Ogden in a 160-pound catchweight affair. By comparison, Ogden landed 42. This included a 41-to-8 edge in significant leg strikes landed for the Chilean fighter.
3: Knockdowns landed by Nuerdanbieke Shayilan in his last three UFC appearances. The Chinese featherweight floored Steve Garcia in the opening round of their bout on Saturday, but Garcia ultimately rallied to earn a finish 36 seconds into Round 2.
53: Total strikes by which Sam Hughes outlanded Jaquelin Amorim over the final two rounds in their preliminary strawweight clash. After nearly being submitted in the opening stanza, Hughes rallied to capture a unanimous decision triumph over the former Legacy Fighting Alliance champion.
3: Submissions attempted by Amorim in Round 1, including a pair of rear-naked chokes that briefly appeared to be under Hughes’ chin.
