Michael Chiesa went to the deep waters of the championship rounds for the first time in his UFC career, but it was Neil Magny who nearly drowned.

Chiesa overwhelmed Magny with his grappling for 25 minutes to earn a clear-cut unanimous decision triumph in the UFC on ESPN 20 headliner at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, Chiesa improves to 4-0 at welterweight and takes another significant step toward contention in the division.

4: Consecutive victories for Chiesa, tying him for the fourth-longest active winning streak at 170 pounds. Only Kamaru Usman (12), Leon Edwards (eight) and Gilbert Burns (five) currently have longer streaks at welterweight.

19: Takedowns landed by Chiesa in four UFC appearances at 170 pounds. “Maverick” landed four of six attempts against Magny on Wednesday and has landed at least four in all four of his welterweight triumphs. In 11 previous Octagon outings at lightweight, Chiesa landed four takedowns just once, in a decision triumph against Mitch Clark in April 2015.

15:21: Total control time for Chiesa, who largely dominated Magny with his grappling throughout the 25-minute affair. By comparison, Magny logged just 2:15 of control time in the bout.

93: Total strikes landed by Chiesa in victory. Magny, meanwhile, landed 52 in defeat. Chiesa also held a 24-to-12 edge in significant strikes landed.

7: Significant body strikes landed by Warlley Alves in a first-round TKO against Mounir Lazzez in the welterweight co-main event. The final three of those were devastating kicks to the liver that floored Lazzez and allowed Alves to unload ground-and-pound for the stoppage at the 2:35 mark. Overall, Alves held a 17-to-2 advantage in significant strikes and a 24-to-2 edge in total strikes.

40: Significant strike advantage for Viviane Araujo in a dominant three-round verdict over Roxanne Modafferi in a women’s flyweight affair. The Brazilian also landed all four of her takedown tries and attempted one submission in sweeping the cageside judges’ scorecards.

105: Combined significant strike deficit for Modafferi in her last three Octagon appearances. “The Happy Warrior” went 1-2 during that time, losing to Araujo (-40) and Lauren Murphy (-28) while besting Andrea Lee (-37).

85: Significant strikes landed by Matt Schnell in a three-round verdict against Tyson Nam at flyweight. That represents a UFC career best for “Danger,” who outlanded his foe 19 to 14 in Round 1, 33 to 22 in Round 2 and 33 to 22 in Round 3.

2,055: Days since an Omari Akhmedov Octagon victory last ended inside the distance, when his UFC Fight Night 68 bout against Brian Ebersole concluded after a round due to his opponent suffering a knee injury. “Wolverine” secured his first finish since then by tapping out Tom Breese with an arm-triangle choke 1:41 into the second round of their middleweight matchup.

67: Total strikes by which Akhmedov outlanded Breese. Akhmedov landed two of five takedowns and battered his opponent on the canvas, also racking up a 25-to-1 advantage in significant strikes.

4: Combined submission attempts between Akhmedov and Breese. While Breese went for three submissions while attempting to defend his opponent’s attacks from above, Akhmedov’s lone submission proved to be the bout’s decisive maneuver.

7: Takedowns landed in 10 attempts by Ricky Simon in a second-round submission victory over Gaetano Pirrello at bantamweight. That ties Simon’s career best, which was matched in a decision triumph against Montel Jackson at UFC 227 in 2018. On Wednesday, Simon landed his seven takedowns in just nine minutes of Octagon time, while he needed a full 15 minutes to do so against Jackson.

225: Combined significant strikes landed by Mike Davis (108) and Mason Jones (117) in a preliminary lightweight clash. Davis, who landed three takedowns to Jones’ one, landed with more authority to capture a unanimous decision.

42: Significant body strikes landed by Davis. By comparison, Jones landed 18.

13: Consecutive professional victories for Umar Nurmagomedov, who began his UFC tenure with a rear-naked choke submission of Sergey Morozov at the 3:39 mark of Round 2. Coincidentally, his cousin, lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, began his Octagon career with a rear-naked choke victory — albeit in the third round — against Kamal Shalorus at UFC on FX in January 2012.

5: Takedowns landed in 11 attempts by Nurmagomedov in less than two rounds against Morozov. Nurmagomedov also outlanded his foe by a 25-to-7 count in significant strikes.

14: Total bouts contested at UFC on ESPN 20, the third most in the history of the Las Vegas-based promotion. Only UFC 2 and UFC UFC on ESP 14, with 15 fights apiece, have had more.
