Wilder to Rematch Ortiz in PPV Battle

This week, Deontay Wilder announced he would be facing Luis Ortiz for the second time, although no date or venue have been made official (rumors are Sept. 28 at the Staples Center). What has been made official is that, unlike the first fight, it will be on PPV. Supposedly, the plan from Wilder’s team is to have him rematch Ortiz, then face Adam Kownacki. Needless to say, fans were not pleased with this decision.

Wilder was accused of ducking Anthony Joshua, especially because he didn’t even wait until the Joshua-Ruiz fight was finished to attempt any negotiation with Joshua. Ortiz gave Wilder all sorts of trouble in their first matchup, so it’s not a bad fight. It’s just not the fight everybody wants.

As for Anthony Joshua, when discussing their inability to make a Wilder-Joshua fight happen, Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn offered Tyson Fury, Kubrat Pulev, Oleksandr Usyk and Dillian Whyte as potential future opponents. Unfortunately, Fury and Usyk are unlikely, Joshua already stopped Whyte in a 2015 bout, and Pulev comes with all sorts of baggage because of his alleged sexual assault of a reporter.

Boxing's big story in the 2000s was Floyd not fighting Manny, then in the 2010s it was Canelo not fighting GGG. Unfortunately, it appears the story of the 2020s might be Wilder not fighting Joshua.

Charlo-Adams Official for June 29 in Houston

Jermall Charlo will be defending his WBC 160 pound title in his hometown of Houston Texas, on June 29. He will fight “The Contender” winner Brandon Adams, who beat Shane Mosley Jr. for the TV title back in November. Talking about the fight, Charlo had the A-plus line “I’m going to finish this fight. My goal is to make quick work of Brandon and show him that there are levels to this. You might be a contender, but it’s another thing to be a champion.”

Shakur Stevenson to Fight Hairon Soccaras July 13 in Newark

Another undefeated fighter getting a hometown bout is Shakur Stevenson, who will fight Hairon Soccaras July 13 in Newark, New Jersey. Originally from Cuba, the 26-year-old Soccaras is 22-0 with 13 knockouts. This isn’t the Cuban Stevenson wants to be fighting; that’s Robeisy Ramirez, the Cuban that beat him in the finals of the Olympics, but with him still not having so much as made his professional debut that fight is likely a while down the road.

Stevenson should be a big favorite in the fight, both because it’s in his hometown and because he’s believed to be far better than Soccaras. In fact, most people see this fight as a step backwards in competition, after Stevenson dominated Christopher “Pitufo” Diaz in April.

Joe Joyce Reportedly Fighting Bryant Jennings

In just his tenth professional fight, rumors are that Joe Joyce, the British Olympic Silver Medalist will be facing longtime heavyweight contender Bryant Jennings July 13th. Joyce is 9-0 with nine knockouts and has already faced guys like Bermane Stiverne as a professional. Jennings is trying to bounce back from a 12th round stoppage loss to Oscar Rivas, but a knockout by Joyce would still do a lot to get people to believe in him, more than they already do.

Jesse Hart-Sullivan Barrera to Fight on Fury-Schwarz Undercard

Jesse Hart has only lost twice; both times to Gilberto Ramirez. Sullivan Barrera has only lost twice; to Andre Ward and Dmitry Bivol. Now, the two loss fighters will face off with each other on the undercard of the Tyson Fury-Tom Schwarz fight June 15 on ESPN+. This is a good matchup to determine which of these men deserve another shot at a title, with Hart moving up from 168 pounds.

Stockton’s Gabriel Flores to Face Mexico’s Salvador Briceno June 8

In Reno, Nevada Stockton California’s Gabe Flores Jr. will be facing Mexican journeyman Salvador Briceno on June 8. The fight will be the co-main event of ESPN’s Top Rank card, headlined by Oscar Valdez facing Jason Sanchez. This isn’t any great step up for Flores (Briceno is 15-3 and has been knocked out twice), but at only 19 years old, there’s no great rush to move Flores along quickly.

Tyson Fury’s Brother to Appear on ‘Love Island’

Tyson Fury’s little brother, 20-year-old Tommy Fury, is a 2-0 professional boxer trained by Ricky Hatton. In an attempt to get out of his brother’s shadow, he will be appearing on the British dating show “Love Island.”

Tyson commented “He’s going on a TV show called Love Island. He’s a good-looking young kid and I think he’s going to be a hit with the ladies on it. He clearly doesn’t look like me because I look like an ogre!”

Mike Tyson Allegedly Gets into Fistfight over Tupac during Podcast Taping

Mike Tyson allegedly got into a fistfight with “Wack 100,” manager of rapper The Game. Details are scarce, but apparently things got heated over Tupac, who Tyson was good friends with. Wack posted pictures of painkillers, and wrote to Tyson on Instagram “You know whose mouth was bleeding first,” while Tyson shared a photo of himself and Tupac along with his famous quote “Everybody’s got a plan until they get punched in the mouth,” then tagged Wack 100’s Instagram account.

Apparently, Wack insinuated that Tupac was either gay or bisexual. There’s no way anybody comes out of this situation looking good, but it wouldn’t be shocking if it leads to an exhibition boxing match.
