On Thursday, Bellator MMA announced that it will be making a return to the city of Newcastle, England, for an event on Feb. 9, 2019. Headlining the event will be two-time Bellator lightweight tournament finalist Patricky Freire (20-8) facing off against BAMMA lightweight champ Ryan Scope (10-1).
Bellator previously held an event in Newcastle, Bellator 191 in 2017, where they put on a short tape-delayed card with only five bouts of their own. The event was co-promoted with British Association of Mixed Martial Arts, which held its own card that night.
One of the most active fighters in Bellator history, Freire holds the second most appearances in the promotion along with his brother Patricio Freire and Joe Warren. They all trail David Rickels, who set the record with 21 bouts a week ago at Bellator 210. Currently riding a four-fight win streak, Freire has knocked out three of those opponents before the second round ended. His lone fight to go to the distance in that stretch came when he defeated former Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight champion Benson Henderson by split decision.
Facing Freire will be Scope, who won his title on the same night of Bellator 191 at BAMMA 33, edging three-time UFC competitor Mickael Lebout on the scorecards. Eight of Scope’s ten victories have come by stoppage inside of two rounds, including seven in a row to open his professional career.
Also appearing on the card will be Newcastle’s own Aaron Chalmers (4-0), famous both for his appearances on British reality show “Geordie Shore” and his burgeoning MMA career. In the latter, he has gone undefeated with four first-round stoppages. Over those four bouts, Chalmers has totaled five minutes and 20 seconds of cage time.
Bellator Newcastle will take place on Feb. 9, 2019 at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England.
