'Cyborg' Calls for UFC to Have A Backup Ready if Amanda Nunes Pulls Out of UFC 232

The first ever women’s super-fight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship takes place at UFC 232 in December between featherweight champion Cristiane Justino, better known as “Cyborg,” and bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes.

‘Cyborg’ has been critical of fighters in the past not wanting to fight her and now wants the UFC to have a contingency plan in place in case Nunes cannot fight.

The UFC had a replacement fighter in Kamaru Usman for the men’s welterweight title fight earlier this month at UFC 228 between Tyron Woodley and Darren Till. While the official word from the UFC was that Usman was there in case either fighter pulled out, most fans agreed he was there to replace Till, who had a track record of missing weight.

“Cyborg” sent out a tweet, tagging UFC Vice President of talent relations Mick Maynard and asking to have a female featherweight ready in case her fellow Brazilian pulls out of their much-anticipated fight. She also took a swipe at the time Nunes pulled out of a title fight a day before she and Valentina Shevchenko were meant to meet at UFC 213 in July last year due to chronic sinusitis.

“The UFC had an extra welterweight make weight when Tyron Woodley fought Darren Till just in case anyone got injured,” Cyborg wrote. “I would like to see another female featherweight do the same thing for Dec. 29 [at] UFC 232, Mick Maynard, so I don’t have to experience what Valentina Shevchenko did at UFC 213.”

UFC 232 marks the final pay-per-view event of the year, with rumors it could feature the return of former light heavyweight champion Jon Jones who will have served his 15-month suspension by that time as a result of testing positive for an anabolic steroid.
