Bellator 172 takes place at the SAP Center in San Jose, Calif., and is headlined by a heavyweight showdown between Fedor Emelianenko and Matt Mitrione. The main card airs on Spike TV at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT, while the preliminary draw will stream on Bellator.com and the Bellator Mobile App. A preliminary middleweight pairing between Anatoly Tokov and Francisco France was also announced on Tuesday.
Koscheck signed with Bellator MMA in June 2015 after exiting the UFC on a five-fight losing skid. The former NCAA Division I national champion wrestler was initially paired with Matt Secor at Bellator 148 but had to withdraw from that pairing due to injury, while another ailment forced “Kos” to pull out of a proposed bout against Paul Daley at Bellator 158. The 39-year-old “Ultimate Fighter” Season 1 veteran hasn’t competed since a first-round submission defeat to Erick Silva at UFC Fight Night 62 on March 21, 2015.
Alonso, meanwhile, brings a 12-7 career mark into the matchup with Koscheck. A native of Curitiba, Brazil, Alonso made his promotional debut at Bellator 142, losing a unanimous decision to Nick Pica. The 36-year-old went 2-0 in 2016 while competing on the regional circuit.
