Calm After the Storm

While the build-up to UFC 279 was about as chaotic as it gets, the end result was a relatively quiet weekend for the rankings.
With Khamzat Chimaev and Macy Chiasson missing weight ahead of the pay-per-view event, Norma Dumont was the only ranked competitor left at UFC 279 with something at stake, and her lopsided victory against MMA novice Danyelle Wolf did little other than allow her to maintain her No. 4 ranking at 145 pounds. Unfortunately, Chimaev’s quick submission of Kevin Holland and Irene Aldana’s spectacular upkick KO of Chiasson can’t do much to improve their standing because both victories occurred at catchweights.
Elsewhere, No. 15 heavyweight Philip De Fries easily vanquished Ricardo Prasel in the KSW 74 headliner. While seven consecutive title defenses in the big man’s division is undeniably impressive, it’s not the type of victory to propel the Englishman up the poll. He stays put for the time being. Finally, Namiko Kawabata retains her No. 4 position at atomweight thanks to a 37-second technical knockout thrashing of Yuko Kiryu at Deep Jewels 38 in Tokyo.
