By the Numbers: UFC 241

The ordering process for Ultimate Fighting Championship pay-per-views has changed: UFC 241 is only available on ESPN+ in the U.S.

Stipe Miocic gave himself a little more time to work, and it paid off handsomely.

A little more than a year removed from his first-round knockout loss to Daniel Cormier at UFC 226, Miocic avenged that loss in a remarkable, come-from-behind fourth-round stoppage in the UFC 241 headliner in Anaheim, California, on Saturday night. After getting outlanded for three rounds, Miocic went to work on his opponent’s body before flurrying for the stoppage at the 4:09 mark of round four to regain the heavyweight crown.

Meanwhile, it was a triumphant return to action after three years away for Nate Diaz, who earned a unanimous verdict over Anthony Pettis in the welterweight co-main event. The Stockton, California, native has now won in three of his last four UFC appearances and looks primed for another big fight if he elects to stay active in the Octagon.

4: Heavyweights to recapture UFC title after previously losing it. With his win over Cormier, Miocic joins Randy Couture, Cain Velasquez and Tim Sylvia as the only big men to accomplish the feat.

5: Victories in title bouts for Miocic, the second-most in the history of the heavyweight division behind only Couture. The Ohio-based firefighter has also bested Fabricio Werdum, Alistair Overeem, Junior dos Santos and Francis Ngannou in championship fights.

6-3: Record for undisputed champions in UFC heavyweight title rematches following Cormier’s defeat.

63: Significant strike advantage for Cormier through three rounds. “DC” outlanded his foe 37 to 7 in round one, 56 to 46 in round two and 57 to 34 in round three.

58: Final significant strike advantage for Cormier. For a UFC title fight, Miocic had the second-greatest significant strike disadvantage in victory behind only Anderson Silva, who was outlanded by 60 significant strikes in a fifth-round submission win against Chael Sonnen at UFC 117.

36: Significant strikes landed by Miocic in the decisive fourth round. Of those 36, 14 were landed to the body of Cormier. Miocic eventually hurt “DC” with his body shots and then flurried with punches for the finish. Cormier landed 31 significant strikes in the round.

162: Significant head strikes landed by Cormier. That accounts for approximately 90 percent of his 181 total significant strikes landed in the contest.

304: Combined significant strikes landed by Cormier (181) and Miocic (123). That is a new single-fight record for a heavyweight bout.

1: Takedown landed by both Cormier and Miocic. Cormier landed his in the first frame, while Miocic’s takedown occurred in the third stanza.

45: Significant strikes by which Diaz outlanded Pettis. In addition to outlanding his foe by a 114-to-69 count in significant strikes, the Stockton, California, native also held a 205-to-86 advantage in total strikes.

510: Combined significant strikes landed by Diaz in his last four Octagon appearances. He is 3-1 during that stretch. Diaz’s opponents have landed 397 significant strikes during that same time frame.

1: Completed round won by Pettis since 2017. “Showtime” took the first round on judge Guilherme Bravo’s scorecard on Saturday. Prior to that, Pettis had lost six completed rounds against the likes of Dustin Poirier, Michael Chiesa, Tony Ferguson and Stephen Thompson.

1,092: Days since Diaz’s last Octagon appearance, a majority decision loss to Conor McGregor at UFC 202 on Aug. 20, 2016.

5: Consecutive UFC victories for Paulo Henrique Costa following his three-round verdict over Yoel Romero in a featured middleweight clash. That ranks as the third-longest active winning streak in the division behind reigning champ Robert Whittaker (eight) and interim king Israel Adesanya (six).

243: Combined significant strikes landed by Costa (118) and Romero (125). That included one knockdown apiece for the middleweight combatants in the opening stanza. Romero outlanded his foe 40 to 37 in round two and 53 to 44 in round three, while Costa held a 37-to-32 edge in the opening frame.

46: Significant body strikes for Costa. Romero, meanwhile, landed just 11 significant strikes to the body.

96: Significant head strikes for Romero; Costa landed 67.

.550: Significant striking accuracy for Costa, who landed 118 of 213 attempts. Romero landed 125 of 284 significant strikes, a 44 percent success rate.

11: Media scorecards that awarded the fight to both Costa and Romero, according to MMADecisions.com, a split that reflected the close nature of the that bout.

20-1: Combined UFC record for Nigerian-born fighters after Sodiq Yusuff (3-0 UFC) starched Gabriel Benitez in the opening round of their featherweight tilt. The others: welterweight champion Kamaru Usman (10-0), interim middleweight king Israel Adesanya (6-0) and Kennedy Nzechukwu (1-1).

81: Significant strikes landed by Derek Brunson in a unanimous decision victory over Ian Heinisch. That represents a UFC best for the North Carolina native. His previous career high of 56 came in a decision victory against Elias Theodorou in his previous outing at UFC Ottawa on May 4. Heinisch, by comparison, landed 58 significant strikes.

0: Takedowns landed in eight attempts by Heinisch. Brunson, meanwhile, was successful on two of his 10 tries.

4: Consecutive bantamweight victories for Cory Sandhagen, who outpointed Raphael Assuncao in a preliminary affair on Saturday. That ties him with Aljamain Sterling and Marlon Vera for the second-longest active winning streak in the UFC at 135 pounds behind only Petr Yan (five). Sandhagen’s overall winning streak is five when including a featherweight triumph against Austin Arnett in his promotional debut at UFC on Fox 27.

62: Significant strikes landed by Sandhagen. Assuncao, meanwhile, landed 45. Sandhagen outlanded his foe 25 to 16 in round one, 14 to 13 in round two and 23 to 16 in round three.

13: Combined guard passes for Casey Kenney (seven) and Manny Bermudez (six) in their 140-pound catchweight duel. Kenney emerged with a unanimous decision triumph in the scramble-heavy affair.

0-4: UFC record for Jodie Esquibel, who has lost all four of her Octagon appearances by unanimous decision. Esquibel, who fell to Hannah Cifers at UFC 241, moved to strawweight from atomweight upon signing with the UFC following a stint in Invicta FC. The Jackson-Wink MMA product has also lost to Angela Hill, Jessica Aguilar and Karolina Kowalkiewicz in UFC competition.

30-24, 30-25, 30-25: Scorecards for Sabino Mazo in a dominant unanimous decision victory over Shana Dobson at flyweight. That ties it with Khabib Nurmagomedov’s win over Edson Barboza at UFC 219 for the second-most lopsided decision in promotion history for a three-round fight, according to MMADecisions.com. The most lopsided was Aleksandar Rakic’s win over Justin Ledet at UFC Fight Night 134. In that light heavyweight affair, Rakic earned scorecards of 30-24, 30-24 and 30-25 from the cageside judges.

170: Total strikes landed by Mazo. By comparison, Dobson landed 102. Mazo also held a 108-to-33 edge in significant strikes and went 4 for 4 on takedown attempts.
