Sherdog’s Top 10: Overachievers
Top 10
One of the wonderful things about mixed martial arts is the fact that grit, determination, durability and technical skill often trump athletic talent. Time and time again, we have seen clever game planning, cardio, the willingness to seek out top-flight coaching and training partners and pure technique triumph over bigger, stronger and more talented fighters.
The latest installment in the Sherdog Top 10 series highlights those overachievers, the fighters who have risen to the top of the heap despite their lack of the kind of measurables -- speed, raw strength, explosiveness -- that so entrance NFL evaluators at the annual scouting combine. Bonus points were awarded for championship achievements, career longevity and the quality of competition:
Number 10 » A unique personality with a long mane of hair, a tendency to belch mid-fight and a high-energy, non-stop style, he has relied for years on his endless endurance, freakish ability to absorb punishment and his willingness to embrace the grind to defeat many notable opponents over a career that now spans 11 years and 46 professional fights.
