Scott Smith vs. Tarec Saffiedine
Round 1
Referee Scott Fischer is the third man for this welterweight bout, the start of the televised card. Smith takes the center of the cage in his orthodox stance while Saffiedine, a southpaw, circles the perimeter and flicks outside thigh kicks. It’s a steady diet of kicks from the “Sponge” in the opening 90 seconds, both to the legs and body, until he opts to tie up. Smith hasn’t been able to establish his jab as he seemingly wants to, and now he’s clinched against the fence. Saffiedine disengages with a right uppercut and misses with a high kick. Smith continues to stalk, trying to wade inside with left jabs and then throw a big right. The 170-pounders tie up and Saffiedine briefly considers a guillotine before muscling Smith into the cage again. Smith is bleeding from his left eye as ref Fischer splits them up with about a minute on the clock. Saffiedine paws with a left jab and thunks him with a right hand over the top. Saffiedine is mixing up his punches and kicks, switching between southpaw and orthodox. A spinning heel kick staggers Smith a few seconds before the horn.
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Saffiedine
Tony Loiseleur scores the round 10-9 Saffiedine
Mike Whitman scores the round 10-9 Saffiedine
Round 2
Saffiedine gets straight back to work with his leg kicks and hook combos. A right high kick slaps Smith on the temple and they clinch on the fence. Saffiedine socks Smith with a short right and looks for a Thai plum to drill a knee, but can’t find the space and backs out. A kick to Smith’s body doubles “Hands of Steel” over and Saffiedine just misses with a leaping knee into the fence. Saffiedine backs out, Smith still with his back to the fence, and picks a few shots before tying up again. Saffiedine is keeping Smith on the fence as he backs out again and conks him with another right high kick. Smith dives for a desperation single-leg and the Team Quest fighter sprawls all over him, driving a few hammerfists into his head and ribs before looking to take Smith’s back. Saffiedine gets his left hook in on the kneeling Smith, but Smith escapes out the backdoor. Back on the feet, Smith stands stock still as Saffiedine stands at range and chooses his strikes. Right hand, right head kick, elbows from Saffiedine, then he clinches and lands knees to the body. Smith is busted up and not offering much of anything in return.
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-8 Saffiedine
Tony Loiseleur scores the round 10-8 Saffiedine
Mike Whitman scores the round 10-8 Saffiedine
Round 3
Still looking fresh, Saffiedine comes out bombing away, putting hooks on Smith’s temple and chopping kicks on his legs. Smith, whose nose is badly cut and possibly broken, is hunting for his Hail Mary right hand. Saffiedine continues switching back and forth, and he drills Smith with a pair of nasty outside thigh kicks before tagging him with a hard straight left down the pipe. Saffiedine is doing well to minimize Smith’s headhunting with his jab and leg kicks, putting angles on the largely immobile American. Smith’s trying head kicks of his own now, but they’re all being blocked with ease by Saffiedine. Superman punch attempt from Smith misses and it’s down to the last 30 seconds now. Saffiedine circles, smacks Smith with a few more straights as Smith tries desperately to finish. Sponge lands a head kick and Smith misses with one of his own, and that’s where it ends.
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Saffiedine (30-26 Saffiedine)

Tyron Woodley vs. Paul Daley
Round 1
John McCarthy officiates this welterweight bout, which goes to the clinch inside the first minute. Before much can happen, Daley, with his back to the cage, catches Woodley with a hard left knee to the groin. McCarthy tells Woodley he has plenty of time to recover and warns Daley to mind the cup. They get back to business and Woodley soon has Daley back in the same position, using over-unders to keep the Brit pinned to the fence. Woodley drills knees inside and looks for one over the top, but can’t quite catch the leaning Daley’s jaw. Daley tries to retaliate with inside knees of his own and stifles a single-leg attempt. McCarthy restarts them and Daley tries to catch Woodley slacking. He doesn’t sneak up on “T-Wood” in time and only gets off a few punches before being tied up again. This time, Daley finds his own way out and takes the center of the cage and swipes with a few errant punches until initiating the clinch. Woodley quickly reverses and they jockey for position on the fence in the last half-minute. They exchange knees to the body, Woodley seeming to score the better, if only slightly.
Jordan Breen scores the round 10-10
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Woodley
Mike Whitman scores the round 10-9 Woodley
Round 2
Woodley’s clinch seems less effective in the early going of round two, with Daley spinning out at will. They tie up again and Daley scores with a hard knee to the breadbasket as Woodley stalls out on the fence and the Sears Centre fans get a bit restless. Woodley finally spins Daley to the ground, where “Semtex” closes his guard and attempts to neutralize the distance while offering middling punches to the ribs. Woodley can’t get much offense on top as he scoots Daley around the cage. As they reach the fence, Daley shrimps and turns his hips out to stand, but gets stuck on his knees. Woodley tries to step around and take the back, can’t get it, and Daley goes back to guard. Nice elbows from Woodley on top now, maybe his best strikes of the round. Ref McCarthy wants them up with about 20 seconds left. Daley sprawls on a shot and Woodley falls to guard, then is forced to upkick as Daley stands above and lobs errant bombs downward.
Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Woodley
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Woodley
Mike Whitman scores the round 10-9 Woodley
Round 3
It’s Woodley swinging hooks early in the final frame, and one appears to surprise Daley. The Englishman comes forward, though, landing a one-two and catching Woodley with a knee as the wrestler comes in for a shot. The takedown attempt is successful, however, and Woodley works from half-guard on Daley’s right side, possible framing up an arm-triangle choke. The submission’s not there, so Woodley goes back to elbowing. Halfway through the round, Daley works his way to the feet, his back to the cage. Woodley goes for another single, but Daley defends ably. Desperate, far-out shots from a suddenly exhausted-looking Woodley give Daley an opening, and he socks the crouching Mizzou Tiger a few times before McCarthy cautions him to striking the back of Woodley’s head. Daley drills a knee into Woodley’s gut as Woodley comes in for a shot, and surprisingly, Daley rolls through with an omoplata attempt. Woodley slips out and that’s where it ends.
Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Daley (29-29 Draw)
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Daley (29-28 Woodley)
Mike Whitman scores the round 10-9 Daley (29-28 Woodley)
Official result: It’s a unanimous decision with all three judges cageside -- James Goodman, John Holzemer and Gabriel Sabaitis -- scoring it 29-28 in favor of Tyron Woodley.
Robbie Lawler vs. Tim Kennedy
Round 1
Veteran official Herb Dean is in charge of this middleweight tilt. The southpaw Lawler bounces around the outside while Kennedy feints and changes levels, finally stepping forward with a gracing front kick to the body. Lawler socks Kennedy with a right hook but simultaneously eats a low kick. The “Ruthless” one doesn’t take long to recover and he’s soon back to bopping in front of Kennedy. Lawler sprawls beautifully on a pair of shots from Kennedy, but gets caught up in a third attempt. Lawler tries to leap free of Kennedy’s grasp on his leg, nearly gives up his back, and winds up in north-south position. Kennedy tries to sneak around to the back, but Lawler powers out. Another high double-leg from Kennedy puts Lawler on his back with a minute left. Kennedy goes to side control and steps into full mount with 30 seconds to go, but Lawler escapes again. Slapping head kick from Kennedy lands as they close out the frame on the feet.
Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Kennedy
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Kennedy
Mike Whitman scores the round 10-9 Kennedy
Round 2
Kennedy has his first takedown of the round sprawled on as the opening minute passes without much action. Lawler crouches low, prepared for another takedown attempt, and swings for a murderous uppercut when Kennedy does shoot in. Kennedy gets inside and eventually drags Lawler down, but the U.S. Army veteran is bleeding profusely once he does. Kennedy’s nose is a mess as works from half-guard, looking to mount again. Lawler puts him back in guard and fires off some nice elbows from the bottom. Kennedy sits up in guard and wails away with hammerfists which are mostly blocked. He puts a few elbows on Lawler over the top and continues to spray blood all over the UFC vet’s upper body.
Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Kennedy
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Kennedy
Mike Whitman scores the round 10-9 Lawler
Round 3
Lawler presses in on Kennedy, who’s been patched up well between rounds. Another stuffed shot from Kennedy and Lawler looks to be gaining confidence as his man fades. Neither man appears willing to let his hands go in the middle of the frame; the pace slows to a crawl. Lawler puts a nice right hand on Kennedy, but doesn’t follow up. Kennedy gets inside, looks for a knee in the Thai clinch, and drags Lawler down with another high double. Kennedy finally gets busy with some offense, pounding Lawler with elbows in the last 30 seconds.
Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Kennedy (30-27 Kennedy)
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Kennedy (30-27 Kennedy)
Mike Whitman scores the round 10-9 Kennedy (29-28 Kennedy)
Official result: Judges Anthony Bilus, Robert Madrigal and Augustine Rodriguez have it 30-27 across the board for the winner by unanimous decision, Tim Kennedy.
Marloes Coenen vs. Miesha Tate
Round 1
John McCarthy returns to referee the evening’s lone championship tilt. After an intense staredown during final instructions, Tate comes straight across the cage and clinches up with Coenen, working underhooks and foot stomps on the fence. Coenen throws a knee up the middle and reverses her challenger, and Tate unsuccessfully tries to jump guard. Tate reverses back to the advantageous position, but can’t find her takedown and Coenen wades out. The Dutchwoman sprawls on another shot and lands a knee, securing a loose choke as Tate drives her into the cage. It’s a brabo choke, and it looks tight as the women hit the floor, but Tate waits it out and extracts her head before moving to side control on Coenen’s left. Tate walks around to the other side and pins down Coenen’s right arm, but the champ gets it out. Tate leans across Coenen with 90 seconds to go and lands a couple elbows from the top. Coenen can’t get out from underneath the wrestler and absorbs a few more elbows before the end of the first.
Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Tate
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Tate
Mike Whitman scores the round 10-9 Tate
Round 2
The women meet in the middle and trade punches, but it’s only a matter of seconds before Tate has Coenen clinched along the fence again. Nice knees to the gut from Coenen are followed by a single-leg from Tate, but Coenen flips her challenger right over the top. Coenen has Tate’s back, looking to sink the hooks in. She has her left leg snaked through, but Coenen’s right leg is pinned beneath Tate. Now it’s a body triangle for Coenen, who works to soften Tate up with punches. Coenen falls to her back and releases the triangle, opting for hooks. Coenen is relentless with her rear-naked choke attempt, pouding Tate with hard right hands to the ribs. Tate is doing well to cover her face from punishment and appears to be on her way out of danger, twisting halfway loose before Coenen adjusts and flattens her out again. Coenen uses her legs to try and peel the arms of Tate away as the second round ticks away.
Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Coenen
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Coenen
Mike Whitman scores the round 10-9 Coenen
Round 3
Coenen smiles at Tate as she lobs leg kicks at the challenger. About a minute in, Tate catches one and gets her takedown in the center of the cage. Coenen has an open guard, tying up the arms of Tate, who can’t do much on top. Now the American postures up, but she goes back to the flat position once Coenen hints at a triangle. Referee McCarthy issues a stand-up order with two minutes left in the third. Tate looks spent as she brings Coenen down again, straight into butterfly guard. Coenen puts a leg over the top and throws elbows from the bottom, the closes up guard; Tate mashes with a few elbows of her own on top. Coenen sweeps nicely at the very last second but can’t do anything with the position.
Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Tate
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Tate
Mike Whitman scores the round 10-10
Round 4
It’s the champion Coenen looking crisper as the fight enters the championship rounds. The Golden Glory product keeps Tate on the end of her jab, flicking out leg kicks for the first 60 seconds before Tate shoots a double and plows her down. Coenen has a headlock, gives it up to isolate an arm. Tate gets to side control on Coenen’s left and the champ tries to roll over the top. Tate leans from left to right, absorbing short horizontal elbows from Coenen. Looping her right arm under Coenen’s head, Tate steps over to the other side and has a deep arm-triangle choke. Coenen bucks her legs, trying to generate some momentum. She can’t, and Coenen is forced to submit for the first time in her career at 3:03 of round four, making Miesha Tate the new Strikeforce women’s 135-pound champion.
Fedor Emelianenko vs. Dan Henderson
Round 1
Herb Dean has officiating duties for the heavyweight main event. The men touch gloves and Fedor is swinging immediately. Henderson stumbles, but stays upright and backs Emelianenko up with a left hook. Outside leg kick from Hendo as he loops his left hand over Fedor’s neck, trying for a right uppercut. The wrestler puts Emelianenko on the cage and the Russian’s bleeding under his right eye already, 45 seconds into the bout. Henderson puts a dozen knees on the inside of Fedor’s left thigh and tries to drag him down, but Fedor grabs the fence. Emelianenko is warned by referee Dean and goes back to absorbing knees, his thigh already showing the damage. Henderson has underhooks and Fedor throws some mild shots over the top. Hendo backs out and swings for the fences, then moves to the middle of the cage. The Strikeforce champ has his left hook ready and his right hand cocked for the stalking Emelianenko. A right hand gets through for Fedor, then a left uppercut, another right. Henderson is in trouble as he flops to his back at the base of the cage. Emelianenko pounces, but Hendo grabs the Russian’s right leg and gets underneath. As Henderson escapes out the back, he keeps his left arm looped around Emelianenko’s waist and socks “The Last Emperor” with a vicious right uppercut beneath the armpit. Emelianenko falls flat on his face and appears to wake up when Henderson puts another punch on the back of his head. It’s too late: Herb Dean is already on his way in for the stoppage, peeling Henderson off the dazed Emelianenko. The official time is 4:12 of the very first round.
