By The Numbers: Alexey Oleynik vs. Chris Daukaus

Mixed martial artists on the opposite ends of the grappler-striker spectrum will butt heads when Alexey Oleynik meets Chris Daukaus in a UFC Fight Night 185 heavyweight showcase this Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It represents Daukaus’ first crack at a Top 10 opponent.

Oleynik has compiled an 8-5 record since he joined the Ultimate Fighting Championship roster a little less than seven years ago. However, the Russian submission savant finds himself on the rebound following a second-round technical knockout loss to Derrick Lewis in the UFC Fight Night 174 headliner on Aug. 8. Daukaus, meanwhile, steps into the main-card spotlight on the strength of a three-fight winning streak. The Team Balance product last appeared at UFC Fight Night 179 on Oct. 10, when he punched out Rodrigo Nascimento Ferreira in just 45 seconds.

As Oleynik and Daukaus approach their clash-of-styles confrontation, a look at some of the numbers that have accompanied them to this point:

43: Years of age for Oleynik, who was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine, on June 25, 1977—16 years, four months and 18 days before the Ultimate Fighting Championship made its debut with UFC 1.

46: Oleynik victories by submission, accounting for 78% of his career total (59). His methods of choice: one arm-triangle choke, two neck cranks, two guillotine chokes, three scarf holds, three heel hooks, five armbars, five triangle chokes, 11 rear-naked chokes and 14 Ezekiel chokes. Oleynik owns eight other wins by knockout and five more by decision.

2: Submission losses on the Oleynik ledger. He succumbed to a rear-naked choke from Leonid Efremov at an International Absolute Fighting Council event on April 30, 1997 and lost consciousness in the throes of a rear-naked choke from Flavio Luiz Moura under the M-1 Global banner on Oct. 9, 2004.

6: Sub-minute stoppage victories to Oleynik’s credit. A 35-second Ezekiel choke submission of Magomed Sultanakhmedov on April 14, 2006 remains the fastest finish of his 74-fight career.

2:43: Oleynik submission attempts per 15 minutes in the UFC—the highest such rate for a heavyweight in the promotion’s history. Frank Mir (2.02), Stefan Struve (1.68), Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (1.61) and Gabriel Gonzaga (1.20) round out the division’s Top 5 in the category.

31: Years of age for Daukaus, who was born in Philadelphia on Sept. 25, 1989. “Black Rain,” “Sea of Love,” “Uncle Buck,” “Parenthood” and “When Harry Met Sally …” were the Top 5 movies at the domestic box office at the time.

9: Daukaus wins by knockout or technical knockout, providing him with 90% of his professional total (10). His only other victory resulted in a unanimous decision.

1: Submission defeat on the Daukaus resume. He tapped to a keylock from Shawn Teed in the second round of their Cage Fury Fighting Championships 53 encounter on Dec. 4, 2015.

4: Knockdowns landed by Daukaus in his two Octagon appearances. He floored Parker Porter twice at UFC 252 and did the same to the aforementioned Ferreira at UFC Fight Night 174. Daukaus won both bouts by first-round knockout.

6: Organizations in which Daukaus has competed during his 13-fight career. He has gone 4-2 in Cage Fury Fighting Championships, 2-0 in the UFC, 1-1 in Xtreme Fight Events, 1-0 in Ring of Combat, 1-0 in CES MMA and 1-0 in King of the Cage.
