By the Numbers: UFC Fight Night Zagreb

The demise of Junior dos Santos has been greatly exaggerated.

The former heavyweight champion put to rest speculation that he is on the decline in the UFC Fight Night headliner, as he picked apart Ben Rothwell for five rounds en route to a clear-cut unanimous decision triumph at Zagreb Arena in Zagreb, Croatia, on Sunday afternoon.

With the victory, “Cigano” ended Rothwell’s surprising four-fight winning streak and in the process re-established himself as one of the sport’s top big men. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC Fight Night “Rothwell vs. Dos Santos,” with statistics courtesy of FightMetric.com.

.630: Significant striking accuracy for dos Santos, who landed 157 of 247 attempts. Rothwell, meanwhile, landed 77 of 212 significant strikes, a 36 percent clip.

857: Career significant strikes landed by dos Sanots, most all-time among UFC heavyweights. Cain Velasquez is second with 668.

12: UFC victories for dos Santos, third-most in promotion history behind only Andrei Arlovski (14) and Frank Mir (16).

3:01:33: Total fight time for dos Santos, No. 1 in UFC heavyweight history. The Brazilian spent 25 minutes in the Octagon against Rothwell to surpass Roy Nelson (2:43:23) and Cheick Kongo (2:43:26) on the promotion’s all-time list.

6: KO/TKO victories for Derrick Lewis in UFC competition since 2014, the most in the promotion during that time. Conor McGregor is second with five, while Max Holloway, Neil Magny and Anthony Johnson are tied for third with four KO/TKO triumphs apiece. Lewis stopped Gabriel Gonzaga via knockout 4:48 into round two of their co-headlining encounter.

58: Combined significant strikes by which Lewis has outlanded opponents Gonzaga (17 to 5), Damian Grabowski (14 to 1) and Viktor Pesta (41 to 8) during his current three-fight winning streak.

9: Career KO/TKO losses for Gonzaga following Sunday’s defeat. Eight of those have occurred in UFC competition.

24: Takedowns landed by Gonzaga in UFC competition, tying him with Cheick Kongo for No. 3 all-time in the promotion. Only Randy Couture (25) and Cain Velasquez (33) have more. Gonzaga landed one takedown against Lewis.

1,426: Days since Igor Pokrajac’s last Octagon triumph, a unanimous verdict over Fabio Maldonado at UFC on Fuel TV 3. Pokrajac made his first promotional appearance in 477 days on Sunday, but he wasn’t able to get back into the win column, as he dropped a unanimous decision to Jan Blachowicz in a light heavyweight affair.

148: Total strikes landed by Blachowicz. By comparison, Pokrajac landed 61. Blachowicz also held a 98-to-35 edge in significant strikes.

46: Significant ground strikes landed by Alejandro Perez in his first-round technical knockout win over Ian Entwistle in their bantamweight bout. All told, “El Diablito” outlanded his foe 87 to 0 in total strikes. Entwistle, who spent the contest hunting for leg locks, attempted just two total strikes in the abbreviated contest.

4:04: Time of Perez’s victory, the longest fight of Entwistle’s 12-bout professional career. The Englishman’s previous longest bout occurred at Cage Warriors Fighting Championship 41, when his matchup with Brad Wheeler was stopped 4:00 into round one due to illegal punches to the back of the head.

4: Consecutive KO/TKO victories in the Octagon for Mairbek Taisumov, who finished off Damir Hadzovic with a right uppercut 3:44 into the opening stanza of their lightweight showdown. That is the second longest active finishing streak in the UFC behind Luke Rockhold (five).

23: Finishes (14 KO/TKOs, nine submissions) among 25 professional victories for Taisumov.

59: Total strikes by which Robert Whiteford outlanded Lucas Martins in their featherweight clash. While Martins lacked the volume of his foe, he landed the more meaningful offense to capture a split verdict.

11: Unofficial media scorecards, of the 15 tracked by MMADecisions.com, that awarded the middleweight bout between Alessio Di Chirico and Bojan Velickovic to Di Chirico. Two of the three cageside judges saw it differently, however, giving Velickovic a split-decision triumph.

20: Significant strikes by which Di Chirico outlanded Velickovic. The Italian fighter outlanded his opponent in all three rounds of their preliminary bout.
