In one featured bout, Aljamain Sterling solidified his place as the top contender in waiting with a first-round submission of the previously third-ranked Cory Sandhagen. As a result, “Funk Master” jumps from fifth to No. 3 in our latest 135-pound rankings, while his vanquished opponent falls to No. 5. Unfortunately for Sterling, he’ll have to wait on the battle for the vacant bantamweight crown between Jose Aldo and Petr Yan to get his title opportunity.
Meanwhile, Cody Garbrandt announced his return to contention in emphatic fashion with a highlight-reel knockout of Raphael Assuncao in Saturday’s co-main event. Previously unranked, the former champion returns to the bantamweight poll at seventh, while Assuncao falls from fourth to eighth.
Elsewhere, Alex Perez made a statement at flyweight with a leg-kick TKO of Jussier Formiga in the opening round of their preliminary bout. Perez ascends from ninth to the No. 6 spot at 125 pounds, while Formiga — mired in a three-bout skid — drops to No. 7.
And of course, there is Nunes, who maintained her stranglehold on the top of the featherweight division with a lopsided decision win over Felicia Spencer in the UFC 250 headliner. “Lioness” is currently No. 1 in three Sherdog.com polls — 145 pounds, 135 pounds and pound-for-pound — and has no clear-cut challenger in sight.
